PULLMAN, Wash. – Payden Cawley Lamb and Sam Brown each drove home two runs as the Gonzaga University baseball team triumphed over Washington State University 7-2 Tuesday night at Bailey-Brayton Field.

The win for GU (16-23) evens the season series between the in-state rivals and gives the Zags its third consecutive victory in Pullman. The defeat slides WSU to 17-20 overall.

Gonzaga’s offense jumped on WSU starter Scott Simon from the first pitch. Simon, the losing pitcher of record, lasted just 1.1 innings after allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits. In total the Cougars used six pitchers in the game.

Lamb, Brown, Cory LeBrun and Cabe Reiten each had an RBI in the opening inning. Including a WSU fielding error, the Zags tallied three hits for the early 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added to its lead with three more runs in the second inning. Back-to-back singles from Mitchell Gunsolus and Caleb Wood set the table for Lamb’s RBI double to right field. Another WSU fielding error allowed Wood to score and Lamb later came home on a Brown single to the right side.

The 7-0 lead was plenty for GU starter Will Abram who worked seven innings for his second win of the season. The southpaw struck out three and did not walk a Cougar. He was tagged for two runs (one earned) on five hits.

Ben Brown was the lone reliever used the Bulldogs. The lefty threw the final two innings and recorded two strikeouts.

Washington State scored runs in the third and sixth innings. Ian Sagdal singled home Trace Tam Sing for the first run and Nick Tanielu’s base hit to right field scored the second.

Next for the Bulldogs is a three-game West Coast Conference series at Saint Mary’s College starting Friday. GU and WSU conclude its season series May 13 in Spokane.
