Baseball Captures Game One Of Saturday Doubleheader

MORAGA, Calif. – Cabe Reiten had three RBI in the first inning and Brock Slavin hit a solo home run in the eighth as Gonzaga University baseball took the morning affair 6-3 over Saint Mary’s College in Saturday’s doubleheader at Louis Guisto Field.

GU improves to 17-23 overall and 12-7 in the West Coast Conference. Saint Mary’s spirals to 13-28 overall, 5-11 in league.

Gonzaga scored four runs in the opening inning off left-handed pitcher Ryan Brockett. Mitchell Gunsolus (walk), Payden Cawley Lamb (single) and Jimmy Sinatro (walk) reached to load the bases with two outs for Reiten. The sophomore then connected for a double to left field to clear the base paths.

Reiten scored on the next play as Cory LeBrun singled up the middle.

Saint Mary’s cut the lead to 4-3 before Gonzaga cushioned its lead in the eighth on Slavin’s homer. With one out, the senior hit his second collegiate home run over the right field fence, giving GU a 5-3 edge.

Caleb Wood drove in the Zags sixth run of the game in the top of the ninth. Gunsolus led off with a walk and trotted home on Wood’s double to left field.

Reliever Kenny Smith got the win after working 3.1 scoreless innings. Starter Taylor Jones was pulled after in the fourth for Smith after giving up three runs on six hits.

Ben Brown and David Bigelow also made relief appearances in the game.

Anthony Villa and DonAndre Clark each had an RBI for SMC. Clark’s three hits paced the Gaels.
