VENTSPILS, Latvia - Steven Gray, who graduated from Gonzaga University this past spring, has signed a professional basketball contract with BK Ventspils of Latvia.

            Gray, a two-time West Coast Conference first-team pick, averaged 13.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 4.0 assists/game in 34 games as senior last season.

            BK Ventspils went 22-6 and won the Latvian Basketball League last season. The team will be one of 32 teams will play in the Eurocup regular season. The field will be made up of 10 direct qualifiers, 14 others that come from the Euroleague qualifying rounds and eight more that win their way into the competition from the Eurocup qualifying rounds. The Eurocup qualifying round is due to end Oct. 6 and the Euroleague qualifying rounds on Oct. 8. BK Ventspils begins Eurocup play Sept. 27.

            Once all the qualifying rounds are finished in early October, a regular-season draw to divide 32 teams in regular season groups will be held. The regular season is tentatively scheduled to begin on Nov. 16.

            Latvia, officially the Republic of Latvia, is a country in the Baltic Region of
Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by Estonia, to the south by Lithuania, to the east by the Russian Federation, and to the southeast by Belarus.
