CAMDEN, N.J. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing team began the 2012 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships Thursday with each boat racing twice on Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The Varsity 8+ put together the strongest outing of the afternoon repechage races, having the team's lone sub-six minute finish, while the Zag Second Varsity 8+ had the best finish in the heat races, placing fifth.

The Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+ and Freshman 8+ will all now race in their respective Third Level Finals Saturday.

The Varsity 8+ opened the heat racing for Gonzaga Thursday, but ultimately fell off pace and finished sixth with a course time of 6:17.693. Brown University won the morning heat race with a time of 5:48.143. Coming in second was the University of Wisconsin at 5:50.820.

Only the top two finishers earned an automatic spot in the Grand Final, so Gonzaga raced in an afternoon repechage.

The Bulldogs cut nearly 24 seconds off its time from the morning heat race and finished their repechage at 5:53.011. Cornell University won the repechage at 5:33.800 and Navy placed second at 5:34.195.

Gonzaga's Freshman 8+ opened its racing at the 2012 National Championships with a heat time of 6:29.201, which placed them sixth. The University of California won the heat race in 5:51.387 followed by Northeastern University in second at 5:58.028.

The Bulldogs, racing in their respective repechage later Thursday afternoon, bettered their time by 27 seconds. Gonzaga finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:02.918 to earn a fifth place finish. Princeton University won the repechage in 5:46.088, with Navy placing second in 5:46.206.

The Zag Second Varsity 8+ placed fifth in their morning heat race at 6:26.874, with Harvard University winning the race in a time of 5:54.945. In the Bulldogs repechage, they placed sixth, crossing the finish line in 6:13.125.

Gonzaga now has a day off and will begin racing Saturday with the Freshman 8+ Third Level Final at 6:30 a.m. PT. The Second Varsity 8+ Third Level Final is set for 6:45 a.m. PT and the Varsity 8+ Third Level Final will begin at 8:30 a.m. PT.
