CAMDEN, N.J. - The Gonzaga University men's rowing Varsity 8+ closed the door on the 2012 season by finishing 18th in the nation as it took sixth in the Third Level Final on the final day of the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships. The Bulldogs also placed 17th in the nation in the Freshman 8+ after they claimed fifth in their Third Level Final and earned a 15th in the Second Varsity 8+ after a third place finish in their Third Level Final.

"The Varsity did not race up to their potential," explained Bulldog head coach Dan Gehn after the race. "I was disappointed with our finish here."

Northeastern University won the Varsity 8+ Third Level Final in a time of 5:32.953, followed by Stanford University at 5:35.120. Dartmouth College and George Washington took third and fourth, respectively, with times of 5:38.156 and 5:38.307. Drexel University earned fifth at 5:48.851, with Gonzaga following as it closed out the 2,000-meter course on Cooper River in 5:52.923.

The University of Washington won the Varsity 8+ national championship, with a two second victory over Brown University. The Huskies winning time was 5:21.482.

The Zag Freshman 8+ probably had the best race of the weekend for Gonzaga. The Bulldogs nearly overtook Drexel for fourth place, but ultimately ran out of course and placed fifth with a time of 6:02.469. Drexel claimed fourth in 6:02.255.

"The Freshman had a great race with a really good sprint and came up short on a couple of crews," stated Gehn.

Syracuse earned the victory in the Third Level Final in a time of 5:51.157, followed by Stanford at 5:53.614.

The Huskie also won the national championship in the Freshman 8+, winning the Grand Final in 5:31.90.

The Second Varsity 8+ - making its third appearance at the national championship - took third in their respective final with a time of 6:03.074. Yale won the race with a mark of 5:54.399.

Washington once again won the Second Varsity 8+ Grand Final, this time finishing the course in 5:31.616.
