Zags Host Washington State Saturday At Silver Lake

SPOKANE, Wash. -

ON TAP: The Gonzaga University women's rowing team hosts Washington State University Saturday at Silver Lake in its lone home regatta of the spring. The event will being at 9 a.m. with the Second Varsity 4+ race. There will be five other races after the Second Varsity 4+, happening in 15 minute increments.

THE FAWLEY CUP: Gonzaga University and Washington State University meet each spring to earn the Fawley Cup. The winner of the Varsity 8+ event earns the rights to the Cup for its respective school. The 2011 dual marked the 20th anniversary of the competition for the Fawley Cup. The Cougars have won 18 of the 20, with Gonzaga last winning the Cup in 2007.

GONZAGA VS. WASHINGTON STATE DUAL SCHEDULE
9 a.m.: Second Varsity 4+
9:15 a.m.: Novice 8+
9:30 a.m.: Varsity 8+
9:45 a.m.: Second Varsity 8+
10 a.m.: Varsity 4+
10:15 a.m.: Second Novice 8+

HEAD COACH GLENN PUTYRAE'S THOUGHTS ON UPCOMING DUAL WITH WSU:
"Since the San Diego Crew Classic, we have been working hard in training and I am looking forward to seeing the improvements we have made on the race course.

"Washington State is one of the best crews in the country and I am excited to see how we compare against them. All of their boats are talented and the races on Saturday can only help us get better for the final three races of the spring season."   

FINAL HOME REGATTA FOR SEVEN SENIORS: Seven seniors will row in their final home regatta Saturday. Chelsea Quilling, Teddi McGuire, Paula Welly and Elise Perkins will each be in the Zag Varsity 8+ boat, while Natalie Wolfrom and Olivia Miller will be in the GU Second Varsity 8+ boat and Agatha Oleksiak will be in the Varsity 4+.

HEAD COACH GLENN PUTYRAE ON THE SENIOR CLASS: "I am so appreciative of what the seniors have given to this program. Each senior is represented in one of our three West Coast Conference championship crews."  

WHAT IS WASHINGTON STATE RANKED?: The Washington State University women's rowing squad is currently ranked 13th in the nation in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Division I poll presented by Pocock Racing Shells.

HOW DID GU DO AGAINST WSU LAST SPRING?:  The Gonzaga University women's rowing team dropped five of six races to Washington State in its 2011 dual with the Cougars. The Bulldog Novice 8+ won the first race of the day, but it wasn't until three hours after the race a winner was declared. A video review showed the Bulldogs with a 0.3 second victory in 7:25.44 to WSU's 7:25.74. Other than that it was all Cougars, who captured the Varsity 8+ race in 7:01.84 to Gonzaga's 7:18.58 and the Varsity 4+ in 8:02.61 to 8:19.13. WSU also captured the Second Varsity 8+, Second Novice 8+ and Second Varsity 4+.

Take Interstate 90 West to Exit 272 (WA 902) Medical Lake Exit
Turn right onto WA-901 (West Medical Lake Road)
Follow Medical Lake Road 5.25 miles
Turn left onto North Stanley Road (Conoco station at corner)
Follow North Stanley Road for half a mile
Turn right onto East Lake Road
Follow East Lake Road for one block
Turn left onto North Hallett Road
Follow North Hallett Road 2.25 miles
Road ends at Silver Lake Camp
