SPOKANE, Wash. -

ON TAP:  The Gonzaga University women's rowing team heads to Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif., this weekend for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships. The WIRA's are held at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center at Lake Natoma, April 28-29. The Zags are looking to claim the Junior Varsity 8+ victory for the fifth time in eight years and the Novice 8+ win for the sixth time in seven years at the WIRA's.

WESTERN INTERCOLLEGIATE ROWING ASSOCIATION SCHEDULE: The Gonzaga University women's rowing team will race four boats at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships; the Varsity 8+, Second Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+.

The Second Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ will both be finals only, set for Sunday. The Varsity 8+ will have two heats on Saturday, with the finals on Sunday. The Novice 8+ will also have two heats on Saturday, with the Petite Final set for Saturday afternoon and the Grand Final Sunday.

COACH GLENN PUTYRAE ON THE UPCOMING WIRA'S: "This weekend is different for us than in year's past. For about 10 years now the West Coast Conference Championship was the same weekend, it now is not until later in May. So to have this championship as a stand-alone event makes it unique for us this year.

"I believe we are starting to hit our stride and our best racing is yet to come. I am also excited for the first-year novices as this is the culminating event for them."
