SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's rowing senior Paula Welly earned Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) second team All-West Region honors Tuesday. Teammates Sarah Atkins, Naseeb Bhangal, Madison Keaty, Malori McGill and Anna Olson were each named to the CRCA Scholar-Athlete Team.

Welly, who was named the West Coast Conference Rower of the Year and garnered All-WIRA first team accolades, is the sixth player in school history to be named CRCA All-Region. She joins Hanna McClintock (2008, 2009), Kelly Steinhaus (2007), Maria Bokulich (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004), Nicole Lustig (2001, 2002) and Laura Curd (2000).

Welly was a member of the Varsity 8+ boat that won gold at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships and place second at the West Coast Conference Championship.

The award recognizes the outstanding performances of rowers and coxswains from each of the five regions, organized into first and second-team selections. Nominated student-athletes are evaluated on the strength of their team's regional finish, coaches recommendations and 2,000-meter erg score. Nominees must have competed in their teams' varsity boat in 75 percent of races this season.

Atkins (Nursing, 3.71 GPA), Bhangal (Psychology, 3.93 GPA), Keaty (Sport Management, 3.73 GPA), McGill (Business Administration, 3.86 GPA) and Olson (Computer Science, 3.64) - all sophomores - were among 505 student-athletes honored by the CRCA for their work in the classroom.

This is the second academic honor for both Atkins and Bhangal as each were also named to the WCC Rowing All-Academic Team this season.

To be considered for the Scholar-Athlete Team, student-athletes were required to meet all eligibility requirements defined by their institution, row in the institution's NCAA eligible boats for a minimum of 75-percent of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event and carry a 3.5 GPA or higher for her career. Also, the student-athletes selected must have been upperclassmen (2nd, 3rd, or 4th year) in terms of eligibility and their head coaches must be good standing members of the CRCA.
