Spokane, Wash. - Shannon Reader, a member of the Women's Basketball team, has been named February's Zag-of-the-Month. Reader has been given this award for her accomplishments in the classroom, devotion to the community, and commitment and contribution to Gonzaga Athletics. The Lake Oswego, Oregon native has left her mark on the Spokane community and Gonzaga University in many ways.

Reader is a Senior majoring in Public Relations and minoring in Promotions. She has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.26, and has been named to the President's List in both the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 semesters. On top of excelling academically, Reader has also developed herself as a leader and devotes much of her time to Athletics' leadership opportunities. As S.A.A.C. President, Reader is responsible for planning several student-athlete events as well as representing GU at WCC S.A.A.C. meetings. Reader was also selected to be a member of the Student-Athlete Leadership Institute for the 2010-2011 school year.

Within the Spokane community, Reader has been involved in several service organizations, including Union Gospel Mission, Alzheimer's Association, Campfire Girls, Campus Kitchens, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Soles4Souls. Her passion for serving others will continue as she embarks on the next chapter of her life. Reader will devote the next two years to the Teach For America program in Arizona. She was selected out of thousands of applicants for this position, and will begin her duties in May of this year.

In her athletic career at Gonzaga, Reader has continued to stand out with her passion for the game of basketball. Reader appeared in nearly 80 games and joined the Bulldogs for 4 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Reader and her classmates have set the building blocks for the future in winning 115 games in the past 4 years. They have set a new standard and have proven a name for the program; a name that stands with National Championship teams. She was a part of 3 consecutive runs to the Sweet 16 from 2010-2012, as well as the historic run to the Elite-8 in 2011. Reader and the Bulldogs were WCC Regular Season Champions for 4 years straight, 2009-2012,  and WCC Tournament Champions from 2009-2011.

A student-athlete selected as Zag-of-the-Month exhibits effort and excellence in academics, leadership, integrity, campus involvement, community service, dedication to team, and the ability to serve as a role model for current and future GU students and student-athletes. Each month GU's S.A.A.C. nominates and selects one of their peers for the award.
