Former GU Rower Places 27th At Torino Winter Games

TORINO, Italy - Former Gonzaga University rower Kristine Holzer finished in 27th place on Sunday afternoon at the 3,000 meters speed skating event at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino. Holzer who is competing in her first Olympic games finished with a time of 4:26.60 racing in the fourth pairing of the day. The native of Boise, Ida., was a two-year member of the Gonzaga rowing team helping the Bulldogs capture the 1997 West Coast Conference rowing championship. She was named the Bulldog Club Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 1997. Holzer will compete in one more event at this year's Winter Games when she competes as a member of Team USA in the Team Pursuit event on Feb. 15 and 16. The 3,000 meters was won by 19-year-old Ireen Wust of Holland with a time of 4:02.43. Renate Groenewold of Holland won the silver at 4:03.48 and Canada's Cindy Klassen was the bronze medalist at 4:04.37. The United States top finisher was Catherine Raney in 9th place with a time of 4:10.44. |
