Kris Kassel Named Associate AD For External Operations
SPOKANE, Wash. - Kris Kassel has been named Associate Athletic Director/External Operations, Gonzaga University athletic director Mike Roth announced Thursday.
Kassel has been General Manager of Gonzaga IMG Sports Marketing on behalf of Gonzaga University athletics since 2008. He replaces Dennis Kalina who accepted the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director at Binghamton University in New York.
"We are looking forward to Kris becoming an even more integral part of our athletic department. He has done an excellent job as General Manager for IMG as Gonzaga's corporate partner and we look forward to his move to athletics," Roth said. "Kris brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge with him and we will benefit from him carrying that knowledge into his new position."
Kassel is also looking forward to his new duties.
"I am excited to continue with Gonzaga athletics in this new role," Kassel said. "I have enjoyed my time here with IMG as General Manager of the Gonzaga partnership. I am looking forward to returning to the day-to-day inner workings of an athletic department. There is a wealth of opportunity for Gonzaga to continue to grow its brand and develop its resources for the benefit of our student-athletes and fans and I am excited to be a part of what lies ahead."
Over the past four years as General Manager of Gonzaga IMG Sports Marketing, Kassel was instrumental in a number of initiatives that saw Gonzaga's brand and the resources for the department grow including: the 10-year regional broadcast extension with KHQ and ROOT SPORTS signed in 2008; the 9-year radio flagship extension with Radio Spokane signed in 2009; development of the inaugural regional radio network for Gonzaga athletics including new regional affiliates and Sirius/XM; expansion of radio and television programming to include the Mark Few Radio and TV Shows; women's basketball road games, and the expansion of men's basketball game day broadcasts. The Gonzaga IMG Sports Marketing property also experienced exponential revenue growth over the term, while solidifying corporate partnerships that provided substantial new revenues and brand expansion for Gonzaga University athletics.
Kassel is no stranger to intercollegiate athletics. He served for three years as the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs at the University of Evansville, and prior to his arrival in Spokane, Kassel served as the General Sales Manager at the University of Arizona for IMG. He has also been a member of the Crimson Tide Sports Marketing team at the University of Alabama and the Tiger Sports Properties at the University of Memphis, along with stops at the Baylor ISP Sports Network, the Memphis Redbirds of the AAA Pacific Coast League and as Marketing and Advertising Director for Inside Indiana Magazine, a publication devoted to covering athletics at Indiana University.
Kassel earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University in 1998, received his Master's in Business Administration from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2003 and is a graduate of the prestigious Sports Management Institute Executive Program, a graduate level professional development program jointly sponsored by Notre Dame University and the Universities of South Carolina, Texas, Southern California, North Carolina and Michigan.
Kassel and his wife Lori reside in Spokane with their daughter, Abigail (4) and son, Declan (2).
