Gores Named SWA, Stanford Promoted In Staff Re-organization

May 4, 2000

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University athletic director Mike Roth today announced re-organization within the athletic department support staff.

Senior Women's Administrator/Compliance Director Melissa Freigang has left to accept another position in athletic administration. Her final day at Gonzaga was Monday.

Heather Gores, an assistant basketball coach for the Bulldogs under former head coach Kellee Barney the past six years, will become SWA and also have some compliance responsibilities. Shannon Stanford, a graduate assistant under Freigang, has been promoted to a fulltime position and will have compliance and eligibility responsibilities.

"This is a win-win for us," Roth said. "When Melissa announced she was leaving, Heather approached me about the possibility of moving into athletic administration. I felt it was a great opportunity for us to fill the position from within with someone that is familiar with us and, having been a coach, is also familiar with NCAA rules. It also gives Heather a chance to expand her professional resume.

"Shannon has also done an excellent job for us in her role as a graduate assistant, and this is an opportunity for us to promote from within and give us continuity in that position," Roth said.

Roth said he is still defining the exact roles Gores and Stanford will play, but for the most part sees their positions being interchangeable.

"Both will have broad knowledge of what the other is doing. We aren't going to specialize. If a coach has a question, they should be able to get the answer from either person in that office," Roth said.
