June 16, 2009
ORLANDO, Fla. - Gonzaga University athletic director Mike Roth is one of 29 regional recipients of the Under Armour AD of the Year Award (ADOY) announced Tuesday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA).
The winners will be recognized during the 44th Annual NACDA Convention at the James J. Corbett Luncheon Saturday at the World Center Marriott Resort in Orlando, Florida.
Roth was named the West Region winner in Division I.
There are four geographic regions - northeast, southeast, central and west; while the membership is separated into seven categories - Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A); Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA); Division I (formerly Division I-AAA); Division II; Division III; NAIA; and Junior/Community Colleges, along with one International winner. One winner was selected in each of the seven categories, for a total of 29 honorees.
Roth was named acting athletic director in July, 1997, and was named athletic director in September, 1998. In his 12 years as athletic director the Bulldogs have achieved lofty success. The men's basketball team has been to 11 straight NCAA Tournaments and reached the Sweet 16 five times and the Elite Eight once; the women's basketball team has been to post-season five times including their inaugural NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007 and making a return trip in 2009; men's soccer advanced to their inaugural NCAA Tournament in 2001 and returned in 2007; women's soccer reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 2005; baseball returned to the NCAA Regional in 2009 after a 28-year absence; women's rowing has won 12 of 13 WCC Championships and this past season captured four gold medals at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association regatta, and men's rowing won two gold medals at WIRA's and finished 16th nationally in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship earlier this month.
In Roth's tenure new athletic facilities have included the McCarthey Athletic Center for basketball, the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field for baseball, the Harry A. Green Indoor Rowing Center, the Josh Burrows Performance Athletic Center, the Gonzaga Soccer Field, the Diedrick/DeLong Athletic Training Center, the Academic Lab, a short game practice facility for golf and the Kermit Rudolf Fitness Center.
"I am humbled to receive this award when you look at the outstanding athletic directors up and down the West region, and I am honored to be included nationally with this year's 28 other winners," Roth said. "This award is not just for me but for an excellent support staff, coaches and student-athletes who have helped our visions become a reality and build on the rich traditions of Bulldog athletics."
Gonzaga President Rev. Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., commended Roth on his award.
"I am delighted to hear the great news about Mike Roth. This award is so richly deserved because Mike has been a creative thinker, a true inspiration, an ethical leader and an outstanding strategist. I can't imagine where Gonzaga's athletics program would be without him. He has been professional in every way, and has instilled the highest level of character in our program," Fr. Spitzer said.
NACDA Executive Director Mike Cleary explains the ADOY Award is essential because it highlights the efforts of athletics directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding communities.
"Our Honors and Awards Committee recognized a need for an award such as the AD of the Year," said Cleary, who oversaw implementation of the program to allow all NACDA Officers and Honors and Awards Committee members to participate in the awards process, should they be elected. "The program brings to light the exceptional jobs done by athletics directors across the country. These 29 winners exemplify that, providing us with a group of outstanding athletics directors who excel at their jobs."
