Gonzaga Places 14 On WCC Spring All-Academic Teams

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University had 14 student-athletes named to the West Coast Conference Spring All-Academic Team announced Wednesday.

Baseball and women's rowing led the way with four each while men's tennis, women's tennis and men's golf each placed two on their respective teams.

Baseball players earning the honor were seniors Jason Chatwood (3.43 grade point average in physical education), Grant Kveder (3.30, marketing) and Evan Wells (3.90, journalism), and junior Mark Castellitto (3.27, marketing).

Women's rowing placed seniors Whitney Engle (3.44, accounting) and Jana Holcombe (3.55, psychology); junior Rachel Ross (3.83, biology), and sophomore Emily Wilson (3.62, nursing).

Senior Derek Cheney (3.44, marketing) and sophomore Kyle Huus (3.69, accounting) were selected from men's golf.

Men's tennis had senior Stefan Feddersen and junior Roman Dojcak. Both are business-international majors, Feddersen with a 3.27 GPA and Dojcak a 3.89 GPA. Women's tennis players selected were senior Aglaya Kokurina (3.70, accounting) and sophomore Clare Dodge (3.33, psychology).

"These 14 student-athletes are to be commended for an outstanding performance in the classroom to complement another solid year on the field of competition," Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth said. "Our coaches and support staff are also to be commended for the emphasis placed on classroom performance."

To be considered, a student-athlete must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, be a significant contributor to his or her team, have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution, and participate in at least 50 percent of the institution's completed contests.

"I am extremely proud of all of our WCC Spring All-Academic team members," said WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich. "This is truly a unique group that has been able to balance athletics and academics at a high level and represent the core values of all of our member institutions."
