Gonzaga Student-Athletes Receive Academic Plaudits

SAN BRUNO, CA - Gonzaga University had 145 student-athletes named to the 2008 West Coast Conference Commissioners Honor Roll which recognizes the achievement of student-athletes in the classroom for the recently completed academic and athletic year.

Student-athletes must have a 3.0 grade point average, earned a varsity letter in a conference sport during the past year and completed an average12 graded credit hours per semester.

The honorees are recognized in three categories - Gold with a GPA of 3.75-4.00, Silver with a GPA of 3.50-3.74 and Bronze with a GPA of 3.00-3.49.

Gonzaga had 27 athletes receive Gold, 24 receive Silver and 94 honored as Bronze. Rower Kelly Steinhaus and women's soccer player Lauren Zuckerman each received a 4.00 GPA in graduate school, while the top undergraduate GPA by a Bulldogs was the 3.97 by women's soccer player Elle Sweeney.

"This is an outstanding group of student-athletes," Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth said. "They have achieved success on the field of competition and in the classroom. We have two goals at Gonzaga - to win and to graduate our student-athletes. I think this is a reflection of our coaches and staff that we are accomplishing both of those important goals."

First-year WCC commissioner Jamie Zaninovich also applauded the academic success of WCC student-athletes.

Congratulations to all the members of this year's WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll," Zaninovich said. "These remarkable individuals are living proof that our WCC member institutions are dedicated to the ideals of the true student-athlete and I commend them for their efforts."
