SAN BRUNO, CA - Gonzaga University had 128 student-athletes named to the fifth annual West Coast Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll, which recognizes those student-athletes that possess at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

There were 743 student-athletes who participated in one of the WCC's 13 sponsored sports that were honored from the league's eight member institutions. Only grades earned at WCC institutions may be used in calculating the grade point average for this award. To be considered for this honor, student-athletes must meet the following requirements:

1) Individuals must have earned a varsity letter in a sport which the conference determined a champion in the just-completed academic year.

2) The cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 must be based on a 4.0 scale.

3) The individuals must have successfully completed an average of at least 12 graded credit hours (i.e. non pass-fail hours) per term. Gonzaga had 18 student-athletes receive Gold Honors for a grade point average of 3.75-4.0, 30 were honored under the Silver Honors for a GPA of 3.50-3.74 and 80 received Bronze Honors for a GPA of 3.0-3.49. Senior women's basketball player Juliann Laney had a perfect 4.0 while working on her master's in counseling, while a pair of freshmen - women's rower Martha Buttry and women's basketball player Maria Hassett - was close behind at 3.97. Buttry is majoring in Spanish while Hassett has yet to declare a major.

"Once again I am proud of the job our coaches, student-athletes and support personnel do in stressing the importance of academics," Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth said. "We are here for two reasons - to win games and to graduate our student-athletes. I think we continue to do a great job in both areas."
