SPOKANE, Wash. – The annual Zags Golf Classic will honor the 1999 Gonzaga men’s basketball team during this year’s event on Sept. 14 at Manito Golf and Country Club.

In its 31st year, the Zags Golf Classic will honor the team that helped put Gonzaga in the national spotlight with its run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. The ’99 team won the West Coast Conference regular season and tournament titles to earn a berth in the NCAAs, where they upset big-time foes Minnesota, Stanford and Florida. GU eventually fell 67-62 against UConn in the Regional Final to fall just short of a Final Four. The Zags finished the year with a 28-7 overall record.

That season, Jeremy Eaton, Matt Santangelo, Richie Frahm and Quentin Hall each earned All-WCC First Team honors, while Casey Calvary was named All-WCC Honorable Mention. Head Coach Dan Monson took home WCC Coach of the Year honors. Santangelo also earned WCC Tournament MVP honors, helping GU defeat Santa Clara 91-66 in the league title game.

The run to the Elite Eight began a streak of NCAA Tournament appearances that now stands at 17 in a row after Gonzaga equaled the deep run in last season’s tourney.

Past honorees for the event have included Frank Burgess (1986), Father Bernard J. Coughlin, S.J., (1989), Don Herak (1995) and Jack and Clemy Stockton (2004).

The Zags Golf Classic has become one of the premier events hosted by Gonzaga Athletics, with proceeds supporting athletics in significant ways to improve the student-athlete experience. The event allows a great opportunity for student-athletes to meet the supporters that help put Gonzaga Athletics among the best in the nation.
