2008 Zags Golf Classic
Sept. 17, 2008
Gonzaga supporters and student-athletes alike gathered at Manito Golf and Country Club on Sept. 8 for the 24th Annual Zags Golf Classic. Approximately 250 golfers filled the course in the Morning Best Ball and Afternoon Scramble sessions combined. Student-athletes filtered in throughout the day and were on hand to meet supporters and take swings for participants.
"This tournament really represents what Gonzaga Athletics is all about - it is a real team effort from all of our administrative staff and coaches," said Director of Athletic Giving and tournament organizer Paul Brown. "Our constituents really like having the opportunity to interact with the staff and especially student-athletes from all of the sports programs. This is our biggest fundraising event and greatly enhances the operational budget that supports Gonzaga Athletics."
Besides providing an opportunity to introduce GU athletes to the golfers, the Zags Golf Classic gave Gonzaga the chance to thank significant contributor and Spokane native Tim Welsh. Welsh and his company, Garco Construction, have built the McCarthey Athletic Center, Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field, and is now working on the new Gonzaga Soccer Field. In addition to building the majority of athletic facilities on campus, Welsh has also established scholarships at St. Al's, Gonzaga Prep and Gonzaga University for students who have financial need.
