McCarthey Athletic Center Grand Opening Saturday
Oct. 20, 2004
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University will unveil its new basketball arena as well as the 2005 men's and women's basketball teams Saturday at the McCarthey Athletic Center Grand Opening.
Gonzaga athletic director Mike Roth also said no tickets remain for the first official function in Gonzaga's $25 million, 6,000-seat basketball and special events arena.
"The event is a ticketed event just like all Gonzaga men's basketball games," Roth said. "Every season ticket holder had a ticket to the Grand Opening included in their season ticket packets, and no tickets remain following the university ticket allocation process."
The doors to the McCarthey Athletic Center will open at noon on Saturday, with the official Grand Opening ceremonies beginning at 1:30 p.m., culminating with the ceremonial ribbon cutting on the court. The 2005 edition of Gonzaga's men's and women's basketball teams will be introduced following the ribbon cutting, and the men will then conduct a game-like scrimmage.
"This is going to be a special day. You only get to dedicate a building once and this is the culmination of several months of dreams and hard work on the part of many people. Tom and Phil McCarthey and their families were instrumental in making Saturday a reality and it's our chance to publicly thank them and begin the next era of Bulldog basketball in grand style," Roth said.
There will also be some special prize giveaways, including airfare to Hawai'i and a chance at $10,000.
The Bulldog men open the exhibition season Nov. 5 against Emporia State University with the Bulldog women playing their only exhibition Nov. 6 against Lewis-Clark State College.
