Zags Post Solid Showing in Mile at UW Invitational
Jan. 27, 2018
SEATTLE – The Gonzaga men’s track and field team ran new top-10 mile times in program history on the second day of the UW Invitational inside the Dempsey Center Saturday.
Scott Kopczynski and Brandon Pollard were first and second in the third section. Kopczynski’s time of 4:06.56 is the second-fastest time in program history, and placed 20th overall in the talented 74-runner field. Pollard crossed the line at 4:08.46. He was 25th in the event, followed closely by Jake Perrin in 28th at 4:08.99. Perrin’s time ranks sixth all-time at GU and was second in his section.
“Wow, the Zag milers rocked Dempsey,” Director of GU Track and Field Pat Tyson said. “Although we have higher goals, Gonzaga has never had five milers run under 4:13 on the same day. All five ran below the previous 10th-best time in program history.”
“It was a very successful mile for us,” Gonzaga Assistant Coach Austin Savage said. “They all ran very active, coming off some hard weeks of training!”
Ben Hogan and Yacine Guermali ran personal records in the men’s 3,000 meters. Hogan ran to an 8:33.74 finish, placing 13th in the second section. Guermali finished at 8:36.51, ahead of teammate Kyle Thompson’s time of 8:49.92.
In the men’s 800 meters, Kinsly Smith ran a seasonal best of 1:55.87. He was seventh in the fourth section.
Claire Manley crossed the line at 10:26.95 in the women’s 3,000 meters.
“While Claire stayed focused in the race, she was definitely wondering about her position in the race,” Gonzaga women’s Head Coach Patty Ley said. “She knows what to work on to be confident and strong on the next level of race. I know it will happen for her!”
The Zag men and women return to competition Friday at the Idaho Duals in Moscow, Idaho. The GU women will travel to the Cougar Indoor next Saturday.
