Fraher Leads Zags at Sam Adams Classic

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Claren Fraher coasted to the women's 1,500-meter title at the 11th annual Sam Adams Classic hosted by Whitworth University Saturday.

Fraher's winning time of 4:48.16 was nearly three seconds faster than the rest of the field. Her previous personal record was 4:50.83 set at last season's Buc Scoring Invite on the same track. Teammate Corrine Murray placed eighth at 5:01.73.

"We had some pretty solid performances today led by Claren," GU women's Head Coach Patty Ley said. "She just kept building each lap and showed she will be a force for us."

Amanda Kiefer finished first in the women's 5,000 meters. The freshman crossed the line at 19:21.28. It was her debut in the event for the Bulldogs. Monica Ripple placed third in 22:20.29.

Graham Wendle came in third in the men's 5,000 meters. His time of 15:45.83 was just ahead of fellow Zag Ciaran O'Leary in fifth at 15:55.94. Henry Morris placed seventh at 16:24.96.

In the men's 1,500 meters, Casey Adams crossed the line in seventh. The senior's time was 4:03.81.

Molly Stroosma (2:21.28) and Emily Anderson (2:24.63) placed fourth and seventh in the women's 800 meters. Lauren Saunders finished sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.43.

Gonzaga will stay in Spokane next weekend for the Northwest Scoring Clash (WAR IX) at Spokane Falls Community College. The two-day meet begins Friday afternoon.
