SPOKANE, Wash. -- Shelby Mills cruised to the women's 5,000-meter title on the opening night of the Spokane Memorial at Spokane Falls Community College Friday.

Mills' winning time of 16:31.18 was nearly a minute and a half faster than the rest of the field. Gracie Ledwith of SFCC placed second at 18:09.69. Mills was just off of her personal record of 16:25.10, which is third on the program's all-time list.

The Zags swept the third through sixth places. Amanda Kiefer was third at 18:45.33, followed by Jordan Thurston (18:46.21), Emily Coic (18:55.12) and Kelly Gilbert (19:17.37).

"After a short delay because if lightning, we ended up with a gorgeous night for racing," Gonzaga women's Head Coach Patty Ley said. "Shelby took out the first mile in 5:04 then settled back to 79s and 80s. She was a bit disappointed with the final time, but is looking smooth and strong. Jordan took on pacing duties tonight and led Amanda and Emily to lifetime bests under 19 minutes for the first time. We're hoping for similar weather tomorrow and a chance to see some people shine."

In the men's 5,000 meters, Kellen Manley placed second at 14:57.07. Running unattached, Bennett Gagnon held off Manley with a winning time of 14:55.11. Manley's time was a personal record by 10 seconds. Ian Goldizen came in fourth at 15:13.90 and Graham Wendle was sixth at 15:21.54.

"Great run by Kellen," Director of GU Track Pat Tyson said. "Our redshirts mixed in well with our above guys and made for a good race! It was a fun evening at the falls!

Gonzaga returns to Spokane Falls Community College Saturday. The women's and men's 1,500-meter races begin the day for the Bulldogs at 11:45 a.m.
