PULLMAN, Wash. -- Ian Goldizen led a top-five sweep for the Gonzaga men's track team in the 3,000 meters at the Cougar Invitational Saturday.

Goldizen won the event with a new program record time of 8:31.57. Kyle Thompson cracked the GU all-time top-10 in second place at 8:36.25. Phillip Fishburn (8:45.50), Bennett Gagnon (8:48.67) and Hunter Simpson (8:49.99) rounded out the sweep for the Zags.

Scott Kopczynski ran the seventh-fastest 1,500-meter in men's program history. He crossed the line in first at 3:50.65. Zac Garrard was second (3:52.44), Conor McCandless was third (3:53.54) and Mitchell Beard came in fourth (3:58.30).

Brianna Vasquez continues to improve her mark on the GU women's 200-meter all-time list. She finished second in the event with a time of 26.82, the third-best time in program history. She also placed fifth in the 400 meters at 1:00.73, this third-fastest time on the all-time list.

Claren Fraher and Jordan Thurston were second and third in the women's 1,500 meters. Fraher crossed the line at 4:46.60, while Thurston was close behind at 4:46.64. Amelia Evans (10:21.75) and Julie Henling (10:37.16) placed second and third in the 3,000 meters.

Nathan Vanos won his heat of the men's 800 meters with a personal record time of 1:58.80.

"The weather was absolutely beautiful in Pullman," Director of GU Track Pat Tyson said. "Our goal was not fast times, but just compete and gain confidence for Portland Twilight in two weeks. The athletes are feeling a bit tired as the school year is closing down, but still it was a great day in the Palouse! We'll take a competition break next weekend to get ready for finals."

The Zags will have a week off before competing at the Portland Twilight in Portland, Ore., on May 13. Troy Fraley will represent GU in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the prestigious Payton Jordan Invitational Friday. The meet is an internationally-renowned competition, intended for elite collegiate, national and international athletes.

"Troy was one of 24 athletes selected to run the elite 3000-meter steeplechase at Payton Jordan," Tyson said. "All of the runners are sub-8:48 guys, so expect a blazing performance!"
