Perrin's Phenomenal Freshman Year Ends at Prelims
May 27, 2017
Perrin was the first-ever freshman in program history to compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries. He was 19th in his heat of 24 runners.
“I’m proud of Jake,” Director of GU Track Pat Tyson said. “He’s just a freshman and he stuck his nose in it for a while, but let a gap form a little bit. I’d say 95 percent humidity bit him and others hard, but he still wanted it! It was big time experience that will pay off down the road! He came in 47th and finished 39th as several runners were crushed physically by the difficult heat index and high humidity! You cannot buy this kind of experience! Jake is extremely competitive and will be heavily motivated by this experience! He is a winner and will be a future All-American! I love him and his work ethic. I believe in this kid!”
Tulsa's Marc Scott won the second of the two heats with a time of 14:33.42. The top five times from each heat, along with the next two fastest times, advanced to the national finals in Eugene, Ore. Seven runners from Heat 1 qualified for the national final. Grant Fisher of Stanford had the fastest time in the first heat at 14:12.79.
Perrin squeaked into the field with a time of 14:04.82, the third-fastest time on the GU all-time list and best-ever as a Bulldog freshman. The Lakeside, Mont. native, was seeded 47th in the field, while his brother Zach, a junior at Colorado, was 12th at 13:46.09. Zach qualified for the national finals with a second place finish in the heat at 14:33.84.
Troy Fraley will be the first-ever GU men's runner at the national championships, competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase semifinals on June 7, in Eugene. The first of two heats begins at 5:02 p.m. Pacific Time. Live video and results will be available on GoZags.com.
