Fishburn Places Third at USATF Junior Championships
June 26, 2017

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Gonzaga's Phillip Fishburn received the bronze medal with a third place finish in the men’s 10,000 meters at the USATF Junior Championships Saturday. The upcoming sophomore crossed the line with a time of 31:25.37 at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State University.

Fishburn is now the first alternate for USA for the 2017 Pan American Junior Championships in Lima, Peru, July 21-23. Florida State’s Steven Cross and Aiden Reed of Southern Utah will represent the United States after placing first and second Saturday. Cross won the event at 31:20.95, while Reed had a time of 31:22.54. Cross, Reed and Fishburn pulled away from the rest of 10-runner field and were the front pack in the race.

“The bronze medal,” Director of GU Track Pat Tyson said. “He ran very tough! He led all of last 3,000 meters until 400 to go! Phil fought so hard, and he is not satisfied. I’m so happy he got on podium, as only three runners get on the stage. It was a slow tactical race because of heat. It was 16:10 over the first 5K and 15:15 over last 5K. It was an invaluable experience for Phil, and another example of Gonzaga on the map!”

Fishburn, a native of Kennewick, Wash., had three top-10 finishes during the outdoor season in the 10,000 meters for Gonzaga. He opened his collegiate career with a first place finish at the Buc Scoring Invite. Fishburn ran a personal best of 30:35.61 at the UCLA Legends Distance Carnival.
