Goodwin Leads Zag Men to Win

SPOKANE, Wash. -- In his first race of the season, Sumner Goodwin placed first and led Gonzaga men's cross country to the team title in a dual with Idaho Saturday.

Goodwin's time of 24:32.4 was a personal record and is in the top-15 in program history over an 8,000-meter course. Jake Perrin edged out teammate Kyle Thompson for second. Perrin's time of 24:34.2 just beat out Thompson's 24:34.9.

It was the second straight top-three sweep for the GU men after winning the Clash of the Inland Northwest to open the season. The Zags' point total Saturday was 20, while Idaho's was 39.

Max Kaderabek placed sixth at 24:38.8, followed by Phillip Fishburn in eighth with a time of 24:42.2. Peter Hogan (24:42.4) and Kellen Manley (24:53.1) were ninth and 10th.

In the women's race, Jordan Thurston led the Bulldog women with a second place finish at 18:06.6. Idaho's Andrea Condie won the race with a time of 17:46.8. The Vandals swept spots three through 11 and won the dual, 19-44.

Claire Manley placed 12th for Gonzaga at 18:44.1. Jenna Rogers (19:02.4), Lauren Bourgeois (19:05.3) and Ally Legard (19:06.2) rounded out the Zag scoring in 14th, 15th and 16th.

Gonzaga is at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in Eugene, Ore., on Sept. 29. The elite meet welcomes some of the top programs on west coast.
