Kaderabek Runs Sixth-Fastest 8K in Program History

Oct. 14, 2017

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Running against some of the country's best at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, Max Kaderabek finished with the sixth-fastest time over an 8,000-meter course in Gonzaga men's cross country history Saturday.

Kaderabek's time of 24:08.9 placed 60th in the 292-runner field at Tom Saywer State Park. The Zag men placed 16th out of 41 programs in the race on the same course that will host the NCAA Championships on Nov. 18.

Peter Hogan followed in 80th place at 24:20.6. His time ranks 12th on the GU 8K all-time list. Jake Perrin crossed the line at 24:26.6 in 93rd place. Phillip Fishburn (24:35.1, 114th) and Bennett Gagnon (24:51.0, 145th) rounded out the GU scoring. Dillon Quintana (24:59.2, 164th) and Scott Kopczynski (25:27.2, 222nd) also represented the Bulldogs.

"Max led us with his personal best finish," Director of GU Cross Country Pat Tyson said. "As a team, we were narrowly beaten by No. 18 Georgetown and Notre Dame. We did beat the South Region's fifth-ranked team in Georgia, Boston University (No. 14 Northeast), Pittsburgh (No. 14 Mid-Atlantic), Dayton (No. 8 Great Lakes), Brown (No. 4 Northeast), Baylor (No. 5 South Central), Missouri (No. 8 Midwest), Rice (No. 6 South Central), Kansas (No. 10 Midwest), among others in the deep 41-team field!

"Overall, not a bad showing for us. It was a great rough draft for a young team! It was the first big meet for Hogan, Fishburn, and Gagnon. We are disappointed because we have big time team expectations, and I know the guys are hungry for the West Coast Conference Championships in 13 days, and looking forward to NCAA Regionals in four weeks! It's still early in the season and we have much more in the tank!"

Jordan Thurston was the lone runner for the Gonzaga women. She returned the course where the Zag women made history, qualifying for the 2015 NCAA Championships. The senior ran a 21:17.3 6K Saturday, placing 110th in the 297-runner field.

In Lewiston, Idaho, Claire Manley and Kellen Manley paced the GU women and men to solid finishes at the Inland Empire Classic.

Claire Manley completed the 5K course at the Lewiston Orchards with a time of 17:59.3. She placed 12th in the 129-runner field. The Bulldogs won three of their four dual matchups against Div. I competition.

Aimee Piercy came in 19th place at 18:16.8. Amanda Kiefer (18:19.9) was 21st, while Jenna Rogers (18:23.5) placed 23rd. Caroline McCarthy’s 18:29.7 finish was 27th place.

“Jordan was pleased with her race,” GU women’s Head Coach Patty Ley said. “She had a little interruption to training because of the hamstring a week or so ago, so really looking for a few more days of great training. She is definitely moving in a good direction and she felt good about that next step.

“Claire and Aimee led the women down in Lewiston. Both really took some chances and they led a number of the ladies to cross country 5K bests. Claire broke the 18-minute barrier for the first time and Aimee recorded her best ever as well. Jenna and Caroline continue to be impressive and Amanda seems to be returning to health. Katherine Gustafson and Alex Cerveny had breakthrough races as well.”

On the men’s side, Kellen Manley crossed the line at 24:27.1 in 12th place. His time ranks 15th on the GU all-time list. Alex Heffelfinger placed 15th with a time of 24:36.2. Sammy Truax was 22nd at 24:48.7. Hunter Simpson (25:00.5) and Ciaran O’Leary (25:03.2) were 32nd and 34th.

“Average day for our guys,” Gonzaga Assistant Coach Jake Hurysz said. “We should’ve have run more as a group. However, there were a few highlights. This was the toughest I have ever seen Kellen compete. He had every chance to quit on a windy course and never did. Breakthrough for Alex, this was his best race ever ran in a Gonzaga uniform. Sammy fought really hard and also had the best cross country race he’s ever run at Gonzaga.”

The Zags have a break before traveling to Oakland, Calif., for the 2017 West Coast Conference Championships on Oct. 27. Live coverage will be available on GoZags.com.
