Men Fifth, Women Eighth At WCC Cross Country Championships

BELMONT, Calif. - The University of Portland men's cross team won its 23rd consecutive men's cross country title Saturday morning at the West Coast Conference Championships held on the Crystal Springs Course in Belmont. On the women's side Santa Clara University knocked off five-time defending champion Portland. Gonzaga's men placed fifth in the championship while the women finished eighth in the event. Ryan Anderson and Sam Burch finished just 12 seconds apart to lead the Gonzaga runners. Anderson finished in 26th at 28:34 while Burch finished 28th at 28:46. Nick Schuetze (Portland) turned in the fastest time of the day in the men's division finishing the 8K course in 25:29. On the women's side Becka Hardy was the top Gonzaga runner finishing in 24th place. Hardy covered the 5K course in 20:25. Edit Pakay of Loyola Marymount won the women's individual title with a 17:58 time. Gonzaga now concludes its 2001 cross country schedule.
