BELMONT, Calif. - Ryan Anderson, Joe Miller and Joe Manning finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, Saturday to lead Gonzaga University's men's cross country team to second in the West Coast Conference Championship.

The University of Portland won its 25th straight men's title by sweeping the top five places for 15 points, with the Bulldogs second with 58. Santa Clara University was a distant third with 100 points. The runnerup finish for the Bulldogs was their first such finish since 1995 when they finished second behind Portland for the ninth straight year.

Gonzaga head coach Kevin Swaim was named the WCC Men's Coach of the Year, the second men's honor for Swaim who also garnered the award in 1998. He has also earned the WCC women's honor twice (1997 and 2000).

The Gonzaga women finished fourth as Jill Semenza crossed the finish line in 13th with Jamie Schiel close behind in 16th. Portland won its 14th women's title and seventh in the last eight years with 23 points, followed by Santa Clara with 43, Pepperdine University with 107 and Gonzaga with 122.

Freshman Brett Carter of the Pilots captured the men's crown in 25:42 over the 8K Crystal Springs Course. Anderson was timed in 26:02, Miller in 26:06 and Manning in 26:11. Other Gonzaga competitors were Dan Futrell, 13th in 26:54; David Hannon, 24th in 27:18; Eric Berge, 33rd in 27:54, and Pete Cushman, 44th in 28:44. Cushman is the lone senior for the Bulldogs.

The women's race was won by Tiffanie Marley of the University of San Diego who covered the 5K layout in 18:04. Semenza finished in 18:56 and Schiel in 19:05. Also competing for the Bulldogs were Emily Buck, 27th in 19:34; Cathy Hall, 29th in 19:36; Nellie Ballou, 37th in 19:57; Larisa Manuel, 44th in 20:30, and Naomi Gilna, 50th in 21:19. All seven Gonzaga runners are underclassmen.
