BELMONT, Calif. - The Gonzaga University men's and women's cross country squads each claimed fifth place finishes at the 2002 West Coast Conference cross country championships held at the Crystal Springs race course in Belmont. Sophomore Joe Manning was the top Gonzaga men's finisher at 11th place, covering the 8K course in 26:30. Freshman Jill Semenza was the top Gonzaga female runner in 19th place with a 19:29 time on the 5K course.

The University of Portland won the men's team championship for the 24th consecutive year with five of the top six runners finishing in a Portland uniform. Jeff Driscoll won the individual competition at 24:54. Santa Clara finished second in the men's competition followed by San Diego and Pepperdine. Following Gonzaga in sixth place was Loyola Marymount with San Francisco and Saint Mary's rounding out the field.

Portland's women reclaimed the team championship after falling to Santa Clara last season. It was the Pilots 13th victory in the last 18 women's cross country championships. Saint Mary's College junior Allegra Porter won individual honors with a time of 17:42, but it was not enough as the Gaels finished eighth in the team competition. Santa Clara, San Diego and Pepperdine finished second through fourth with Loyola Marymount and San Francisco following Gonzaga in sixth and seventh place.
