Cross Country Welcomes Idaho for Dual

Sept. 14, 2017

SPOKANE, Wash. -- The Gonzaga women's and men's cross country teams host Idaho in a dual for the second straight year at Mead High School Saturday.

Last year, the Zag men's team placed first and GU's Jordan Thurston won the women's race. Thurston crossed the line at 17:32.8 to claim the individual title. She ran an average mile of 5:38.5 to hold off five Vandal runners that placed second through sixth.

Max Kaderabek led the Gonzaga men with a second place finish. His time of 24:52.2 was just ahead of teammate Scott Kopczynski in third (25:00.1). Troy Fraley, running unattached, won the race with a time of 24:24.9.

Thurston was recently named Preseason All-West Coast Conference, along with men's runner Dillon Quintana. Thurston paced the GU women with a fifth-place finish in this year's season-opening Clash of the Inland Northwest in Missoula, Mont. The Zag men took the team title after sweeping the top three spots, including Quintana's third place finish. Jake Perrin came in first, followed by Ben Hogan.

This will be the fourth dual meet for the GU men under Pat Tyson, and the third for the women under Patty Ley. The Bulldog men beat Oregon in 2011, and lost to Navy in 2014. The GU women lost to Oregon in Eugene in 2015. Prior to Coach Ley, Coach Tyson lost a dual to the Oregon women in Sunriver, Ore., in 2011.

The races will be run around the Mead High School athletic facilities. The course has hosted several high school meets, and is primarily flat and should produce fast times. Some of the race will be run on the Mead track.

The women's race begins at 10 a.m., followed by the men at 10:30. Results will be available on after the races.
