Nov. 10, 2006

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University senior Joe Miller will be the lone Bulldog competing Saturday at the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championship at Blue Lake Park in Fairview, Ore., outside of Portland.

The men's race starts at 12:15 p.m.

The top two finishing teams will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 20. Teams not finishing in the top two can still qualify for the championship meet by receiving one of 13 at-large bids available to teams from all regions. The top four individual runners on teams not receiving a bid will also advance to the championship meet.

Miller finished second at the West Coast Conference championship to earn his fourth straight trip to the West Regional. He covered the 8K WCC Championship Course in 25:58.

The senior from Bremerton, Wash., has steadily improved in each of his three previous trips to the West Regional. Last season he finished 39th over the 10K layout at Stanford in 31:18. As a sophomore he placed 61st in 32:14 at Fresno, Calif., and his freshman season of 2003 he finished 103rd in 32:24 in Portland.
