13 Gonzaga Student-Athletes Earn WCC Fall All-Academic Honors

Gonzaga University placed 13 student-athletes on the West Coast Conference Fall All-Academic List as released by the conference office. The athletes were selected from the fall sports of cross country, soccer and volleyball with the Bulldogs having at least one representative per sport. Gonzaga was second among the eight WCC schools in number of student-athletes honored trailing on the University of Portland. To be considered, a student-athlete must earn at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his or her team. Junior cross country runner Joe Manning has the highest GPA among the Bulldogs honored as he maintains a 3.80 in journalism. Joining Manning from the men's cross country team were Ryan Anderson (3.44, Civil Engineering) and David Hannon (3.28, English). Gonzaga's women's cross country team also placed three student-athletes on the list with Emily Buck (3.51, Exercise Science), Jamie Schiel (3.33, Undeclared) and Jill Semenza (3.26, Biology). The Bulldogs men's soccer team also placed three players on the All-Academic list led by Scott Bertram who earlier this year was named a CoSIDA District VIII All-Academic selection. Bertram holds a 3.58 GPA in Accounting/Finance. Kari Arnason (3.38, Undeclared) and Arni Pjetursson (3.29, Finance) rounded out the men's soccer selections. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Haugen was the lone women's soccer representative for Gonzaga with a 3.52 GPA, her major is still undeclared. Gonzaga volleyball had three players earn All-Academic honors as junior outside hitter Christina Davis had the highest GPA for a Zags female athlete. Davis owns a 3.78 GPA in Public Relations. Gonzaga also placed Emilee Gihring (3.62, Business) and Natasha Kozen (3.23, Psychology) on the list. "These honorees represent the commitment of WCC student-athletes to both academic and athletic excellence," said WCC Commissioner Michael Gilleran. "Every year it's a difficult process to narrow the long list of qualified nominees from each institution. All of those nominated should be proud of their achievements."
