TUCSON, Ariz. - Evan Wells' single in the top of the ninth inning broke up a no-hitter Friday as the Gonzaga University (0-1) baseball team fell to No. 27 University of Arizona (1-0) 14-0 in the opening game of the 2007 season.

Arizona's Preston Guilmet (1-0) earned the win allowing one hit in 8.1 innings while striking out four. Combining with Guilmet for the shutout was Cory Burns, who faced the final two batters of the game. Taking the loss for Gonzaga was starter Brandon Harmon (0-1). Harmon allowed eight runs, seven earned, on 13 hits in 5.0 innings of work. Bobby McEwen and Jeremy Stumetz saw time out of the pen for the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga was held to four base runners for the game, with Aaron McGuinness reaching base twice. McGuinness was hit-by-a-pitch in the third inning and was walked in the eighth inning. Ryan Wiegand, who was walked to lead off the second frame, and Wells were the only other two Zags to reach base.

Arizona used extra base hits to their advantage all afternoon recording 12, including a solo home run by T.J. Steele to lead off the fifth inning.

C.J. Ziegler paced the Wildcats' offensive push going 4-for-5 with three doubles and a single, while driving in three runs and scoring four.

The Wildcats and Bulldogs will resume the three-game series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., PST.
