Bulldogs Take Advantage Of Errors In 12-5 Win
Feb. 5, 2006
EDINBURG, Texas - Gonzaga University (3-1) took advantage three University of Northern Colorado (1-2) errors to score seven unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Bulldogs won their third straight game by a 12-5 margin. The game was halted after Northern Colorado hit in the top of the seventh due to a time limit on the tournament game at the Texas Pan American Baseball Classic. Nate Williams picked up the win for Gonzaga tossing 1.2 innings of shutout baseball to improve to 2-0 on the year. Bears reliever Matt Collins was saddled with the loss after allowing all seven unearned runs. Collins fell to 0-1. With the game tied at 5-5, Gonzaga first batters of the sixth inning both grounded out. Darin Holcomb reached on a two out single and Jackson Brennan walked to put runners at first and second. After an infield error loaded the bases, Bobby Carlson drove home the first of seven runs. Tyson Van Winkle delivered a two-run single later in the inning for the Bulldogs big blow. Gonzaga opened the game scoring three runs in the first on RBI hits by Brennan and Ryan Wiegand. The Bulldogs added single runs in the third and fifth with Wiegand collecting another RBI single. Wiegand, Brennan and Holcomb all finished with two hits. Northern Colorado battled back into the contest with two runs in the third and single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth. Bears outfielder Grady Gorman drove home two of the five runs going 2-for-4. Zach Harris and Kevin Sandberg also had two hits for Northern Colorado. Gonzaga returns to action next weekend at the Coca-Cola Baseball Classic in Surprise, Ariz., with tournament games against Arizona State University, University of Nevada and Oregon State University.
