Baseball Downed 3-1 at UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. -- Gonzaga baseball fell 3-1 in the first of a three-game series at UC Irvine on Friday night at Cicerone Field at Anteater Ballpark.
GU's offense was held in check much of the night by UCI starter Andre Pellante. He went seven scoreless innings, giving up just one hit, while walking two and striking out 12.
On the mound, GU starter Daniel Bies put in a solid outing, holding the Anteaters scoreless in his final five innings of work. UCI did get to Bies in the first with three runs, but the senior struck out seven and walked one, giving up seven hits. Calvin LeBrun entered in relief and completed two scoreless innings of work.
The Zags got to reliever Taylor Rashi in the eighth when Yake tripled to bring home Schubert for GU's lone run of the game.
GU put the tying run at the plate after Daniel Fredrickson walked with one out in the top of the ninth, but the Zags were unable to put together a rally.
