Bulldogs Close Out Perfect Weekend With Win Over Dayton
March 1, 2009
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Gonzaga University baseball team finished off a perfect 3-0 weekend with a 12-3 victory of the University of Dayton in each team’s final game at the Phoenix Classic at Marich Field Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 overall with their sixth consecutive win after beating the University of Notre Dame, Creighton University and Dayton over the weekend.
Gonzaga lit up the scoreboard throughout the afternoon, finishing with 16 hits and scoring runs in the first, third, fourth, fifth and eighth innings. Seven of nine starters recorded hits and a total of nine Bulldogs finished with at least one hit.
The Bulldogs had junior catcher Tyson Van Winkle finish the day 3-for-5 with one double and three RBI and junior third baseman Jason Chatwood and freshman Royce Bolinger each launch their first home runs of the season. Bolinger went 2-for-5 with a home run, scored two runs and drove in two.
Freshman starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter (2-0) was just as impressive as the Bulldog offense, firing seven strong innings, allowing just one earned run on three hits and struck out three to notch his second win of the season. After allowing a Dayton lead-off homer in the second inning, the left-handed Carpenter allowed just two hits the rest of the way and retired eight of the final 10 batters he faced.
The Zags made their first mark on the scoreboard in the first as Van Winkle’s two-out two-run double scored seniors Evan Wells and Ryan Wiegand for an early 2-0 lead. Gonzaga added two more runs in the third on RBI singles by Van Winkle and senior designated hitter Anthony Synegal to make 4-1 after three complete innings.
In the fourth, freshman Ernesto Ortiz led off the inning with a base-hit and following a fly-out by Wells, Chatwood connected for a two-run shot to add the GU lead 6-1. The runs continued to come in the fifth as the first four Gonzaga hitters in the inning reached base with Wells providing the bog blow with a bases-loaded two-run double for the first two runs of the inning. Later in the inning, junior centerfielder Drew Heid added an RBI single and Wiegand also added an RBI on a sacrifice fly to make it 10-1.
Following Dayton’s two-run eighth inning, Bolinger’s two-run blast, the first of his career, in the Gonzaga half of the eighth capped the scoring for the day.
In the three games over the weekend, the Zags posted a .353 team batting average, scored 30 runs, had 13 extra-base hits and posted a 2.67 team ERA.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a non-conference matchup against Washington State University in Pullman Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
