Final Stats

FRESNO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University baseball team lost a close one to Dallas Baptist University, 5-4 in the opening game of the Pepsi/Johnny Quick Classic Monday afternoon at Beiden Field.

With the loss the Bulldogs drop to 8-6 while the Patriots improve to 8-8.

The Patriots jumped out to a three run lead in the third inning, but the Bulldogs answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning. Junior second baseman Scott Campbell got things started for the Bulldogs with a RBI single to left field bringing across Aaron McGuinness. With the bases loaded Bobby Carlson walked bringing across Darin Holcomb, who had walked, for the second run of the inning. Senior Jeff Culpepper then grounded out to second base which plated Campbell to end the scoring for the inning.

The Bulldogs took a one-run lead in the fourth inning when Campbell hit an RBI single to right field bringing in McGuinness, who had walked.

The Patriots then put up one run in the seventh and eighth innings to claim the victory.

Campbell was the offensive leader for the Zags as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI.

Bobby McEwen (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs allowing no runs on one hit in 0.2 innings of work. Barrett Pliler (2-1) picked up the win for the Patriots allowing no runs on two hits in two innings of work.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday as they square off against Penn State University in a 4 p.m. game at Beiden Field
