Bulldogs Fall 9-4 In Series Finale

PROVO, Utah - The Gonzaga University baseball team dropped the series finale against Brigham Young University 9-4 Saturday afternoon at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo Utah. With the victory, the Cougars took the three-game series 2-1.
The Bulldogs fall to 10-10 with the loss, while BYU improves to 10-6 for the season.
Gonzaga was led at the plate by Mark Ellis, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs batted in. Also recording multiple hits for Gonzaga was Dustin Colclough and Michael Rhodes, both of which recorded a pair of singles.
Starter Chris Highmark (2-4) took the loss for the Zags, throwing against his former team. Highmark, who transferred to Gonzaga this season from Brigham Young, threw 4.2 innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on eight hits and four walks. Shawn Wayt also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs, allowing three runs, one earned, on 3.1 innings of work. Jake Wortham (3-2) earned the win for the Cougars, allowing two runs on five hits over 6.0 innings.
BYU jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage after the first inning, after Jonathan Cluff hit a sacrifice fly to score Leon Johnson, who reached base on a double to left field.
The Cougars added two more runs in the bottom of second as well as one more in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Ellis hit is first double of the game in the fifth inning to score McGuinness, who singled to center, to narrow the score to 4-2.
Before Gonzaga was able to catch up, BYU scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth and a run in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead to 7-3.
The Zags scored a run in the seventh, by combining a single up the middle by Colclough and a double to right by Ellis.
Once again, the Cougars answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to cap their game scoring and widen their lead to 9-3.
Gonzaga capped its scoring in the top of the ninth when McGuinness was plated on a sacrifice fly by Evan Wells.
Colclough and Bryan Winston led the Bulldogs in the three-game series, each posting a .500 average. Colclough went 6-for-12 with a double, four runs scored and one run batted it. Winston, who recorded four hits Friday, went 7-for-14 with two doubles, one run scored and two RBI.
The Zags will wrap up a 22-game road swing this week when they travel to the University of Utah for a two-game series starting Monday. Thursday, the Zags will play its first game on Gonzaga's campus in nearly three and a half years when they face off against Rider University in the first game at the new Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.
