Pitchers Shut Down Chicago State, 6-0
March 10, 2006
LEWISTON, Ida. - Four Gonzaga University pitchers scattered four hits on Friday evening as the Bulldogs (10-7) pitching staff extended its scoreless inning streak to 21 innings with a 6-0 shutout win over Chicago State University (2-6) in Lewiston, Ida. The game was moved to Lewis-Clark State College following late winter weather in Spokane on Wednesday. The two teams will continue their two-game series on Saturday evening at 4 p.m. in Lewiston.
Josh Monroe, Clayton Mortensen, Brandon Harmon and Cory Powell combined to work all nine innings allowing only four CSU hits while striking out 12 Cougar batters with one walk. Mortensen (3-3) was credited with the win with three strong innings on the mound. Shawn Neubauer allowed five of the six Gonzaga runs to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
The Bulldogs put the only two runs they would need on the board in the bottom of the second as Darin Holcomb continued his mastery of CSU pitching with a two-run single. During last weekend's 22-4 win over Chicago State, Holcomb drove home a school record 10 runs with two grand slams and a solo home run. The sophomore third baseman would finish with two hits and two RBI.
Gonzaga added three more runs in the third on a Bobby Carlson RBI single, balk and sacrifice fly by Dustin Colclough. The final GU run came in the 8th on an Aaron McGuinness RBI double. Carlson also had two hits for Gonzaga. Alex Hall was top CSU hitter with two hits.
Following Saturday's game against Chicago State, the Bulldogs will travel to the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif., with six games in six days starting on Monday afternoon with a 4 p.m. game against Miami University of Ohio.
