Baseball Rallies Again For 7-4 Win Over Illinois State
March 13, 2003
FRESNO, Calif. - A day after scoring five runs over the final three innings to collect a tie the Gonzaga University Bulldogs (7-9-1) once again rallied from an early deficit to defeat Illinois State (4-5) in day four action of the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic in Fresno, Calif. The Bulldogs stayed undefeated in tournament play as they rebounded for a 7-4 victory over the Redbirds. Gonzaga now plays Frenso State or Penn State in the final day of pool play on Friday.
Gonzaga jumped on the board in the top of the first inning as Eric Rodland laced a double down the right field line and later scored on a Jeff Culpepper RBI single to center. Illinois State responded with four runs in the bottom of the second against Bulldogs starter Eric Dworkis. Jay Molina had the big hit of the inning a three-run home run to left field as the Redbirds batted around against the Gonzaga sophomore.
Dworkis would work through the jam and pitch seven strong innings to improve his record to 3-1 on the year. Illinois State starter Kyle Zaleski also looked strong as he settled down after the first inning run. Zaleski would be lifted in the sixth after allowing the Bulldogs to tie the score with three runs in the top of the fifth. Gonzaga was able to take advantage of a bases loaded situation to extend the inning and tie the score.
Gonzaga would then take advantage of several Illinois State miscues as they scored two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth. Culpepper and Gordon Corder each had productive days at the plate as they both drove home two Bulldog runs.
Relief pitcher John Gonzalez picked up his second save of the tournament as the left-hander tossed two innings with four strike outs. Todd Stein was saddled with the loss for Illinois State falling to 1-1.
The Redbirds out hit the Bulldogs as they Jake Blair and Chris Shepherd each had three of the team's 11 hits. Gonzaga had seven players with one hit each with Rodland and Nick Froman scoring two runs each.
