Baseball Wins Series Finale At Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Eric Dworkis (2-2) tossed 8.1 strong innings and the Gonzaga University Bulldogs posted two big offensive innings on Sunday afternoon as the Bulldogs (6-11) won the series finale against Oregon State University, 10-5, in Corvallis. Gonzaga will return to action next Saturday afternoon with the West Coast Conference opener against Saint Mary's College before opening the 2004 home season on Monday, March 22 against the University of Washington.

Gonzaga jumped on the board in the third inning as Jeff Culpepper and Kiel Thibault each drove home runs with singles to centerfield. The Bulldogs would keep the pressure on Oregon State starter Ben Rowe (0-1) in the fourth inning as David Johnson connected on a two-run home run. Gonzaga added one more unearned run in the frame to jump out to a 5-0 lead.

Oregon State (12-5) chipped away at the Gonzaga lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth inning. Paul Richie drove home the Beavers run in the fourth while Andy Jenkis scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Dworkis would allow only five hits while striking out five OSU batters. He would exit in the ninth inning allowing only two earned runs. John Gonzalez would close out the game with Oregon State scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a Matt Hernandez two-run single.

The Bulldogs also added additional runs of their own with an Aaron McGuinness solo home run in the sixth and four more runs in the ninth inning. Culpepper drove in two of the Bulldogs runs in the ninth while Marshall Bratton had one RBI. Culpepper would finish the game 2-for-3 while Thibault had three hits and McGuinness added two. Jacoby Ellsbury was the lone Oregon State player with multiple hits finishing 2-for-4.
