Bulldogs Fall To Cougars 13-2

SPOKANE, Wash. - - The Gonzaga University baseball team suffered its first loss at the new Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field Tuesday afternoon, falling 13-2 to Washington State University in Spokane.
With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 14-11 for the season, while the Cougars improve to 13-7. The Zags are now 3-1 at their new home. Last weekend, Gonzaga opened the ballpark sweeping a three-game series from Rider University.
Starter Chris Highmark (2-4) suffered the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing seven runs, four earned, on nine hits and one walk over 4.1 innings. CJ McClure, Josh Monroe and Bobby McEwen all saw time out of the pen for Gonzaga. Washington State's Connor Lambert (2-1) earned the win throwing 7.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two.
WSU jumped out to an early 1-0 run in the second inning thanks to a single through the left side by Zach Borba that scored Jim Murphy, who led off the inning with a single.
The Cougars sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth inning en route to posting eight runs on five hits and two Bulldog errors. Highlighting the inning was a three-run home run to left center by Paul Gran.
The Zags ruined WSU's bid for a shutout when they posted their first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Darin Holcomb led off the inning with a double to left before scoring two batters later on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Dustin Colclough.
Aaron McGuinness scored Gonzaga's second and final run of the game in the bottom of the eighth to bring the score to 9-2. The shortstop, who doubled to open the frame, scored on a sacrifice fly by Evan Wells.
Washington State added four additional runs in the top of the ninth to finalize the score at 13-2. The first run of the inning came on a single to right by Borba, while the other three runs were scored on a homer to left by Cody Bartlett.
McGuinness went 2-for-3 for the afternoon and was the lone Bulldog to post multiple hits for Gonzaga, who was out-hit by the Cougs 17-6. Also recording hits for GU was Mark Ellis, Michael Rhodes, Holcomb and Bryan Winston, who recorded a single to extend his hit streak to 10 games.
Gonzaga will take the field again Wednesday when they host the University of Washington at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
