Bulldogs Drop Game Two Of Series At #15 UC Irvine
March 20, 2010
IRVINE, Calif. – Gonzaga University dropped the second game of its series at No. 15 UC Irvine 13-1 Saturday afternoon. Drew Heid led the way for the Bulldogs (8-10) with two hits.
The Anteaters (12-6) picked up the win with a three run first inning and consecutive five-run frames in the fifth and sixth innings. Gonzaga picked up its run in the third inning after Clayton Eslick earned a bases-loaded walk.
UCI jumped out the early 3-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of a lead-off walk and a Bulldog throwing error before three consecutive RBI-singles put the runs on the board.
Gonzaga had an opportunity to push multiple runs across in the third inning but came away with only one. Kevin Hawk led off the inning with a walk, two batters later Andy Hunter singled and Mark Castellitto was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Eslick earned walk to force in the run but UCI escaped further damage as Cameron Edman’s line drive found the glove of the Anteater centerfielder to end the inning. That would as close as the Zags would get as back-to-back five run innings to put the game out of reach.
Bulldogs starting pitcher Ryan Carpenter (1-2) took the loss after allowing seven earned runs in over five innings. Irvine starter Christian Bergman picked the win after going six innings and allowing one earned run.
The Zags wrap up their three-game series with UCI 1 p.m. Sunday.
