Baseball Falls Short At Saint Mary's
March 28, 2003
MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's College (12-14, 3-3 WCC) took advantage of two crucial Gonzaga University (11-12-1, 2-5 WCC) errors to build an early 6-0 lead and then cruised to a 9-3 victory at Luis Guisto Field in Moraga.
After jumping on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second against Gonzaga starter Ed Clelland (2-1), the Gaels used two Gonzaga errors in the bottom of the third to muster all the offense they would need for the game. Gilbert Gil and Delaney Gallagher each reached on back-to-back Gonzaga errors and Nick Conte made the Zags pay with a two-run single to center. Tim Spooner and Mike Harris each added RBI's in the Gaels four-run third.
Saint Mary's starter Eric Bowden (4-3) held the Bulldogs in check allowing only two hits prior to the seventh inning. In the seventh Gonzaga rallied for some offensive fireworks of their own as Chris Sinner and Gordon Corder connected for back-to-back hits, Corder's an RBI double into the left field corner. Brad Welker and Sam Hess added RBI singles and Bowden exited the game with bases loaded and one out in the inning. Gabe Palma entered the game in relief and got a fly out to right by Danny Evans. Gaels rightfielder Adam Bellows then gunned down Hess at the plate shutting the door on the Bulldogs rally. Palma would close out the game to pick up his first save.
Spooner answered the Bulldogs offense in the bottom of the seventh as he blasted a two-run home run to put the game out of reach. Spooner finished with three RBI while Conte and Harris each had three hits for SMC. Gonzaga was led by Welker's 2-for-3 afternoon as the Gaels outhit Gonzaga 11-9.
