Baseball Explodes For 13-6 Win Over Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University Bulldogs (12-13-1, 3-6 WCC) ended a five-game losing streak at Louis Guisto Field as the Bulldogs exploded for 13 runs during a 13-6 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary's (13-15, 4-4 WCC) on Sunday afternoon.
With the game tied at 5-5, Gonzaga scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and then added four more in the eighth as they avoided a sweep by the Gaels. Danny Evans had the big hit of the inning as he delivered a 2-run single to left field after David Johnson and Danny Evans connected for RBI hits earlier in the frame.
John Gonzalez (1-2) picked up the win for Gonzaga he pitched as he pitched 3.1 innings of relief allowing only a single Saint Mary's run in the bottom of the seventh on a Tim Spooner solo home run. Patrick Donovan closed out the final two innings for Gonzaga with four strike outs.
Gonzaga added four more insurance runs in the top of the eighth Johnson and Nick Froman producing RBI hits around a pair of saint Mary's run scoring balks. David Fox (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief for the Gaels.
After both teams went scoreless through the opening three innings, Gonzaga put a five-spot on the board in their half of the fourth. Evans had a three-run home run to start his 5 RBI afternoon while Brad Welker and Jeff Culpepper added RBI hits.
Saint Mary's answered with five runs in their half of the fourth Adam Thompson's double to left center scoring two runs. Nick Conte opened the scoring with an RBI single and Gilbert Gil was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to add another Saint Mary's run.
Johnson continued to swing a hot bat for Gonzaga as he finished 4-for-5 for the second day in a row, the Bulldogs pounding out 18 hits. Evans had three hits to go along with his five RBI while Chris Sinner and Culpepper also had three hits.
Spooner had three hits to lead Saint Mary's.
Gonzaga returns home for a Tuesday game against Washington State at August/A.R.T. Stadium on the Gonzaga campus. Start time is 2 p.m. The Bulldogs then return to the road with a three-game WCC series at Portland starting on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
