SPOKANE, Wash. - Ryan Carpenter struck out seven and Billy Moon had three hits to help the Gonzaga University baseball team defeat the University of New Mexico 3-0 Friday evening at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.

Carpenter (3-1) pitched seven innings and allowed six hits and a walk. Cody Martin went the rest of the way striking out four to earn his fifth save of the year. In addition to earning their fourth shutout of the season, the Bulldogs (14-8-1) pitching staff has held opponents scoreless at home for 35-straight innings.

Eric Lane and Royce Bolinger registered a pair of hits while Marco Gonzales and Steven Halcomb each produced one. The Bulldogs also got RBIs from Bolinger, Moon and Gonzales.

New Mexico's (9-18) Jake McCasland (1-3) suffered the loss after 6 2/3 innings of work. He struck out two and walked three.

The Bulldogs (14-8-1) scored the game-winning run in the first inning. Lane hit a one-out single to right center and Moon and Bolinger hit back-to-back doubles to help the Bulldogs take a 2-0 lead. Moon extended his hitting streak to a team-best nine game while Bolinger and Lane extended theirs to seven and five, respectively.

Gonzaga got its third run in the third inning. Moon led off with a single, Bolinger followed with another single to move Moon to third and Gonzales hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

After Carpenter allowed a one-out single in the second, he would retire the next 10 batters but he then got into a jam in the sixth inning. He gave up back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt to start the inning but got out of trouble by striking out the next two batters.

Martin came into the game in the eighth and struck out three of the five batters he faced. In the ninth he retired the side on a strikeout and two fly outs.

Tyler Olson will make his fifth start of the year when the Bulldogs and Lobos play game two of the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
