Offensive Explosions Lead Zags To 17-4 Win Over Lobos
April 2, 2011
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University baseball team used 18 hits and a wind blowing toward left field to beat the University of New Mexico 17-4 Saturday.
Five home runs were hit that direction in the game and although the Lobos (9-19) were the first to take advantage of the wind with two solo homers in the third and fourth inning, the Bulldogs (15-8-1) got three from Tyler Chism, Billy Moon and Royce Bolinger in the fourth and fifth.
Starter Tyler Olson (4-1) threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits. He also struck out six and walked one. Mark Phillips had a strikeout and a walk in 1 2/3 and Kenny Smith closed the game allowing two unearned runs on two hits. New Mexico's starter Bobby Mares (2-4) allowed 10 runs, one unearned, on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. He struck out two and walked one.
The Lobos snapped the Bulldogs streak of 37 shutout frames at home when Ben Woodchick hit a two-out solo home run in the third inning.
After Chism led off the third inning with a bunt single, Mares tried to pick him off at first but his throw went high, allowing Chism to advance to second. Cameron Edman was hit by Mares and Steven Halcomb tied the game with a single to center field. Following Keegan Acker's bunt single, Lane hit a two run single to center field and advanced to second during a pickoff with Acker between second and third base. After Lane advanced to third on a wild pitch, Moon hit a RBI groundout to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.
The Lobos cut the Bulldogs lead to two in the next inning with another solo home run to left field. The Bulldogs got the run back and added more in their half of the inning on Chism's two-run homer.
As it began to hail during the fifth inning, the Bulldogs offense put the game out of reach with a hitting barrage. After Lane hit a one out single, Moon and Bolinger followed with back-to-back home runs to extend their hitting streak to 10 and six games, respectively. Clayton Eslick doubled to left center and following a groundout, Chism walked and stole second. Edman hit a two-run double to left field to give the Bulldogs an 11-2 lead.
Leading 12-2 in the eighth, the Bulldogs added more runs to their lead. Lane hit a one out double and Moon followed with a RBI double. Pinch hitters Payden Cawley Lamb and Brock Slavin were awarded first base on a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively, and Thomas Henderson hit a bases clearing triple down the right field line.
Gonzales will look to pitch his third-straight complete-game as the Bulldogs and Lobos conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
