Zags Drop One To WSU

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University baseball team was defeated by Pacific Northwest rival Washington State University 7-3 Tuesday afternoon at Avista Stadium in a non-conference game.
With the win the Cougars improve to 16-17 and the Bulldogs fall to 18-11 with the loss.
The Bulldogs jumped out to the early lead as they put up three runs on four hits in the first inning. The scoring began for the Bulldogs on senior Jeff Culpepper's RBI single to right field which brought across Scott Campbell from third. Aaron McGuinness then reached on a fielder's choice which brought across Kiel Thibault for the second run of the inning. GU would cap their scoring for the game on Will Ayala's RBI single to right field which scored Bobby Carlson.
The Bulldogs would hold the three run lead heading into the fourth inning when the Cougars would get on the boards scoring five runs on five hits to take the lead. WSU would score on RBI singles by Jim Murphy, Zach McAngus, Zach Kosturos and Jeff Miller. The final run of the inning would come on a sacrifice fly by Jason Freeman. The Cougars would add two more runs in the eighth inning to put the game at its final of 7-3.
Jayson Miller (1-3) picked up the win for the Cougars as he allowed no runs on no hits in two innings of work. Right-hander Bobby McEwen (0-2) was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs allowing four runs on four hits in three innings of work.
The Bulldogs will resume their West Coast Conference play on Friday as the University of San Francisco comes to town for a three-game set. Friday's game will begin at 3 p.m. at Avista Stadium.
