Baseball Drops Final Game At August/A.R.T. Stadium
April 13, 2003
SPOKANE, Wash. - In the final baseball game ever to be played at Gonzaga University's August/A.R.T. Stadium, the host Bulldogs (15-19-1, 4-11 WCC) could not make a 1-0 early lead stand up as they fell 8-3 to the University of San Francisco (16-23, 9-9 WCC). The Bulldogs will play the remainder of their home 2003 schedule at a site to be determined later this week after the Gonzaga University Board of Trustees voted on Friday to start construction on a new basketball arena and baseball complex. The construction which starts on Monday calls for the new arena to be built on the site of August/A.R.T. Stadium with the baseball field moving a few hundred yards away from its current location.
The Bulldogs looked to make their last home game a memorable one as catcher Sam Hess legged out a triple in the bottom of the second inning get Gonzaga started. After the next two batters failed to score Hess, senior Danny Evans hit a bloop single over the Dons first baseman Joe Jacobitz for the games first run.
San Francisco finally broke through against Bulldogs starter Eric Dworkis (4-4) in the top of the fifth inning after Dworkis had cruised through the opening four frames. The Dons took advantage of two fielding errors in the inning as they scored five runs, two of them unearned. Armand Gaerlan had an RBI single in the inning after Ryan Hanson scored the Dons first run with a solo home run to left. Hanson killed the Bulldogs all weekend long as he drove home four runs on Sunday to finish the weekend with eight RBI.
Gonzaga trimmed the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth as Brad Welker singled up the middle for one of his three hits on the afternoon. Welker also added two doubles in the game finishing 3-for-5. Hanson then put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh as he drilled a ball down the right field line just inside the first base bag. All three Dons on base would come around to score on the Hanson double, his second hit of the afternoon.
The Bulldogs had one last rally in the bottom of the ninth as the team did not want to close out their stadium on a down note. The Bulldogs loaded the bases against San Francisco relief pitcher T.J. Franco as Kemp Quackenbush walked ahead of singles by Sam Hess and Jackson Brennan. Evans then drove home his second run of the game with a single to left. Franco would get a fielder's choice to end the game and the Bulldogs stint at August/A.R.T. Stadium which opened as Pecarovich Field on April 7, 1967.
San Francisco had two hits each from Gaerlan, Royce Fukuroku and Hanson. Kevin Rose (3-5) pitched eight innings to collect the win. Gonzaga was led by Welker and Evans each with three hits while Hess finished with two. The Bulldogs head to Loyola Marymount this weekend for West Coast Conference action before hosting Whitworth College on Monday, April 21. The Gonzaga University athletic department will announce the location of that game later this week.
